No boating as water level at Krishnarajasagar Dam rises

Pair of Painted storks (Mycteria leucocephala)...
The water level at the Krishnarajasagar Dam is rising steadily even as the floodwater is being let out.

On Sunday, the outflow was stepped up to 20,000 cusecs which led to suspension of boating at the Ranganathittu bird sanctuary, disappointing many visitors.

The reservoir is logging 32,000 cusecs while 20,000 cusecs is let out into the river and the level is maintained below 122 feet against a maximum of 124.8 feet. This is the second time in three years the reservoir is being filled to the brim in early August.

However, the outflow is not likely to cross 50,000 cusecs. Sources said the boating was suspended following the rise in the outflow and is likely to remain suspended till the weekend, which could affect the tourist flow during the extended weekend.

If the outflow is over 20,000 cusecs, the river current makes it risky for boating, they stated.
Right now there are only ibis at the sanctuary. Since the outflow is stepped up slowly, there is no damage, they stated.

If the outflow crosses 50,000 cusecs, the birds will suffer, they noted. Lokesh Mosale, a wildlife photographer, said the nesting season is almost through and those staying back have their nests on the higher plains.
