Gurgaon traffic police personnel will soon get Nokia E5 handsets, which will be directly linked to servers in the Police Control Room. The phones will enable police personnel to take pictures as soon as motorists violate traffic rules, and then upload them onto the server.
Traffic ‘challans’ will be sent to the violater’s home through courier. Dubbed as ‘Third Eye’, the project has been launched in Gurgaon in collaboration with mobile handset company Nokia, Millennium City Welfare Society and Danave India. As many as 200 people were booked for traffic violations during the trial run.
Police Commissioner Surjeet Singh Deswal launched the project at Shankar Chowk, Gurgaon. This is the first time mobile phones are being used in a North Indian city to nab traffic offenders, he added.
The handsets, provided by Nokia, have a special software called Tselina — developed by Danave. “The name of place, time of the incident and date will also be recorded in the server. Soon, we will increase the number of mobile phones from 50 to 200,” Deswal said, adding that more would be provided, if required.
